Packaging

Recover

In the early 1990's, The Coca-Cola Company was one of the first companies in the world to use recycled food grade PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) in its packaging.

In New Zealand all our bottles and cans are recyclable, save a small number of caps, closures and labels. The recovery of these containers and their materials is critical to our sustainability efforts.

Our goal is to reduce packaging waste. That's why we design our packages to be recyclable and invest in programs that enable their recovery so they can be used again.

Doing the right thing

As well as ensuring all our packaging is recyclable, we actively campaign for recycling and anti-litter initiatives across New Zealand. Our bottling partner Coca-Cola Amatil (NZ) is a signatory to the 2004 NZ Packaging Accord - a voluntary accord to minimise waste and increase recycling in New Zealand. Coca Cola Amatil (NZ) is also represented on the Packaging Council of New Zealand Executive Committee and are Board member and corporate sponsor of Keep New Zealand Beautiful.

Give it back. Recycle

'Give it back. Recycle' is the new, long-term recycling platform for Coca-Cola New Zealand which is rolling out as part of Live Positively. Our goal is to find ways to inspire people to recycle more by making it fun as well as simple.

Most New Zealanders are good recyclers at home with over 97% of households having access to kerbside or community recycling facilities(data sourced 2006). By contrast, only 18% of waste material collected out-and-about is recycled.

Coca-Cola in New Zealand and its bottling partner Coca-Cola Amatil (NZ) have invested millions of dollars in establishing programmes to encourage outdoor recycling, establishing recyclable materials collection from a number of large events, to initiating partnerships with specific venues and organisations in order to improve public place recycling.

Not only are recycling bins provided at all our events, but we ensure messages about the importance of recycling are also promoted at the same time, to highlight the value of recycling and caring for the environment. We also partner with event organisers and environmental and community groups to encourage recycling and minimise material being sent to landfill.
